About Us:
After catching my first wave in Huntington Beach, I was hooked on surfing and decided that I needed a board of my own. I was young and couldn’t afford to buy one, so I learned how to shape one on my own. As time went on, I began shaping for anyone that was looking for a new board.
A few years later, in the 70’s, I headed down to San Diego and ended up living in Cardiff, where I continued shaping for some of the local surfers in the area. It was a great feeling, watching someone having fun on a board that I created with my own hands, as much as it is today.
I continued shaping and glassing my own boards and lucked out, in the early 80’s, when I was asked to start shaping for Rip Curl Surfboards out at the Moonlight Glassing factory in Encinitas. It was around the same time that I discovered a young Rob Machado, who had a natural talent for surfing. I soon began shaping all of Rob’s boards and began shaping some for his friend Kalani Robb who lived on the north shore of Oahu.
In the mid 80’s, I went to shape for Rusty Preisendorfer, where I worked with Jon Carper, Rick Hammon, Steve Barto and Roger Beale, a group of talented shapers in the San Diego area. I gained a lot of experience there shaping island guns for several pros.
After a couple of years, I decided to leave Rusty to focus my attention on my own label, Sauritch Surfboards.
I love shaping every style of board under the sun, including retro fish, shortboards, guns, hybrids, longboards and experimenting with different quad configurations as well as hand shaping e.p.s. epoxies in all sizes and shapes.
I still believe in shaping by hand and surfing as much as possible.
